Soil Management in Global Spotlight

On March 13th, the UN Global Compact will be hosting the Principles for Sustainable Soil Management meeting in Bonn, Germany. It will develop principles aimed at addressing soil health and will be based on the Food and Agriculture Business Principles.

It is a bold move to create specialized rules for soil management to which companies are likely be held if they are signatories to the Global Compact.

This is the second meeting in a series which will be occurring over the next few months. After this, there will be meetings in Asia, Africa, and Latin America. The first was a meeting of experts in New York, where it was agreed that the principles will focus on “the economic, environmental and social aspects of soil health and will provide context and linkages to relevant global issues”. It was agreed that the principles will not include detailed consideration of plant genetics, farm chemicals, or food waste.
